Innocent teachers, lawyers, doctors, business owners, scientists, engineers, healthcare professionals, academics and IT specialists, who have contributed to the British economy, are getting caught up in a sweep to catch dangerous immigrants.
These citizens, when they apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), are battling stringent rules. Home Office officials are threatening them with deportation under the 2014 Immigration Act and tell them to ‘voluntarily’ leave the UK within two weeks. Those who can appeal face a costly fight. In the meantime, they are denied free healthcare, cannot rent properties and are dismissed from their employment.
The Home Office guidance says the power should only be used when cases involve ‘criminality, a threat to national security, travel bans or war crimes’, yet officials are refusing based on ‘character and conduct’ such as discrepancies in their tax reports. Critics say that this is being done to meet unrealistically high targets for net migrations under the ‘hostile environment’ policy.
Support groups claim there are as many as 1,000 innocent people in such situations. In 9 out of 10 appeals, the court has ruled in favour of the migrants. It is hoped that the Home Office will stop using the legislation in this way.
