Migrant

There is no internationally accepted definitive definition of a ‘migrant’, but the most correct version of the term is “a person who moves from one place to another to find work or improve their living conditions”.

Although a migrant may not be fleeing persecution, they are still entitled to their human rights. Migrants should never be forced to return home without a legitimate reason – governments are expected to protect them.

Immigrant

An immigrant chooses to resettle to another country. Policies are put in place in countries for immigrants to seek legal residency and citizenship.

An illegal immigrant is a person without legal status and who is undocumented.

Asylum Seeker

When a person flees their country to seek sanctuary in another, they can apply for asylum which is the right to be recognised as a refugee and receive assistance and legal protection. They must demonstrate their fear of persecution in their home country is justified and legitimate.

Under EU rules, member states are allowed to return an adult asylum seeker to the first EU country they reached.

Seeking asylum is a fundamental human right: everyone has the right to enter another country to seek asylum in certain circumstances.

Refugee

A refugee has been forced to leave their country to escape war, persecution or a natural disaster.
