New rules published as part of the new immigration policy, mean that non-UK nationals who are sleeping rough could be deported. The new rules come into effect on December 1st and make rough sleeping grounds to refuse a person’s right to stay in the country. The Home Office claim the policy will only be used if the individual has refused support, as a last resort, but many are unconvinced.
Home Office Urged To Reconsider Policy
Following the announcement of the policy, several UK charities asked the government to reconsider the plans. They warned it could prevent vulnerable homeless people seeking the help that they need. A total of 78 organisations including Shelter, St Mungo’s and Crisis have signed a letter to the home secretary, saying please do not punish people for being homeless.
It states: “Those in the UK legally but with no access to state support, for whom employment is not possible in the pandemic, are at risk of being pushed into exploitative work and modern slavery to avoid rough sleeping and being at risk of deportation. Domestic abuse survivors may be forced to stay with their perpetrators.”
Opposition from Labour
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan called the inhumane rule “inhumane”. He said: “The injustice and cruelty of the proposed new immigration laws is a reminder of how the most vulnerable in our society are targeted.”
The Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Thomas-Symonds, told The Guardian that he thinks deporting homeless people is immoral and that the Home Office’s plans are appalling as we face a recession and are still in a global pandemic.
